Where's my double - breasted suit?
L’homme. Hombre. Male. One thing we all have in common, we want to look good. Whether, it’s a neat beard, silky skin, or a fitted fit; we want to make sure we are well represented. Moreover, today, there is a wardrobe staple that’s missing lately; and that is the double-breasted suit.
I’ve looked, scoured, hunted even talked to tailors and all are saying, it’s not in fashion. I politely feign surprise and ask: POURQUOI?! CET COSTUME EST LE MEILLEUR MODE POUR LES HOMMES. Then, I just putter away trying to figure out if my taste has aged, or did I miss a memo. There are two things that I base my reasoning as to why the double-breasted suit is relegated to second best:
POURQUOI?! CET COSTUME EST LE MEILLEUR MODE POUR LES HOMMES.
Skinny and slim is in
It really is old- TRULY!
Let’s first start with the skinny and tight crowd. Instagram influencers with their diatribe of followers have swapped skinny and tight as a homonym for fitted. There’s a distinct difference between a skinny and slim suit, than a fitted suit. Simply, it revolves around the leg and where your suit jacket sits.
Skinny suit pants are tight from the thigh to the leg, which leaves little room for movement.
Slim suit pant are slightly tapered, almost bootcut for added comfort.
These two styles both push a modernized male. In the 21st century, that is what most people are consuming. Modernity ( shrugs ). Sharp, crisp, revealing angles. But is it modest? What happened to modesty? What happened to mystery? Fitted suits or tailored suits attach to the body, but at a precision that allows the body to dance without ripping seams. There-in lies, the misfortune of the double-breasted suits. These suits can achieve a forward look, but they date themselves. They feel nostalgic.
Double-breasted suits feel old. I’m a classic guy. I would rock double-breasted suits everywhere I go, because they are sophisticated, neat, and I’ll throw it in there: debonair. When we see ourselves in double-breasted suits, we are taken back to a time where men opened doors, greeted women as ladies, people dressed up to go the market. Sadly, that era has passed, not because it should have- it just did.
For men’s fashion, it usually stays the same with some variances when it comes to suiting. When I say variance, I mean charcoal black to gray. The cycle is longer for older silhouettes to return to form. I do believe that as these chaotic times continue to grow, we will reflect and yearn for a simpler time. The double-breasted suit will make a triumphant return. One can only hope.
